Verse for today – “Therefore remember that formerly you, the Gentiles in the flesh, who are called “Uncircumcision” by the so-called “Circumcision,” which is performed in the flesh by human hands—remember that you were at that time separate from Christ, excluded from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world (Eph. 2:11-12).”

In Paul’s day, if you were not Jewish, you had little to no hope of a relationship with the one true God. There were many Greek and Roman gods you could choose from and many idols you could worship. But if you desired a relationship with your Creator you needed to be born Jewish or become a Jewish proselyte.

Since the book of Ephesians is written to non-Jews, or Gentiles, as they called them, Paul is helping his readers remember their plight before hearing the Good News about Jesus. The Gentiles were called “Uncircumcision” (it was a derogatory name) simply because they were uncircumcised. Circumcision was the sign of God’s covenant with Israel. God told the Jews to circumcise every male child 8 days old or older as a sign of HIS covenant with them in their very bodies (Gen. 17:1-14). So, the words in these verses would be impactful reminders for Paul’s Gentile audience. They, as Gentiles, were outsiders. They were excluded from God’s promises. They were separated from God Himself and had no hope in the world.

In the very next verses Paul reminds his readers of the radical and wonderful changes God accomplished for them; but before we explore these wonders consider the truth that many in our day also feel far from God. How about you, dear Reader? Do you feel separated from Him and separated from His people? Do you feel separated from His promises and without hope in the world? Jesus came to earth to offer an answer to this separation and loneliness. If you have not already called out to Him as your own personal Lord and Savior, I invite you to take that step today! Tell your Creator that you are sorry for your sin and ask Him to forgive you and make you a new creature in Christ. Begin the journey today that will lead you to a completely new life and radical new future. Even if you have already begun your walk with the Savior and have made some mistakes in life, you too can ask for His help and He will restore your closeness to Him if you will allow it. Jesus said this: “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life and have it abundantly (John 10:10).”
